The Hetch Hetchy Valley, an aerial view of Yosemite’s companion canyon!

Reggie Van Stockum, flying over the great Sierra Nevada Mountains on top of the Tuolumne River’s “Hetch Hetchy” Valley in November 2023. The name of the valley is derived from a Native American phrase for “edible grasses.”

The river and its valley were damned by San Francisco in order to supply the ever burgeoning population of the San Francisco Bay area. The O’Shaughnessy Dam rises to a height of 430 feet. Water began to flow   along  the 167 mile journey to San Francisco in 1934.

It said that the damming of this valley broke naturalist John Muir’s heart. The political expedience of the measure was fueled by the great San Francisco earthquake and fire.
