Teddy Rosevelt was president and he managed to protect Yosemite, the glorious canyon in California’s Sierra Nevada’s Mountains. That canyon had a companion, the one cut by the Tuolumne River in its own gorge just to the north. Rosevelt tried to protect that one too, but wasn’t successful. In 1906 the “Great Earthquake and Fire” devastated San Francisco and my family. The pressure to rebuild, made San Francisco’s demand for that river water irresistible. Dams were built and by 1934 the Tuolumne River water began arriving in the city. That is why water in San Francisco is so darn tasty. And that water allowed for the economic growth that now supports our nation. But the cost is greater than just what is paid for a gallon of that fluid. And it broke John Muir’s heart at the taking. I took this video out a commercial aircraft window flying to San Francisco to visit my family.
