John C. Fremont’s Disastrous 1848 Colorado expedition!

Why did he do it? In the winter of 1848 through almost impenetrable, snow filled mountains! He wasn’t guided this time by that intrepid scout, Kit Carson. And he wasn’t working for the government anymore, he had just been court-martialed after his third expedition for actions taken during the California revolt against Mexican rule . This Time he was employed by well heeled speculators (probably including his father in law, Senator Thomas Hart Benton!) searching for the most direct route through the Rockies for a Transcontinental Railroad. It would not be the path where 10 of Fremont’s 35 men were led to their death! Up Embargo Creek in the La Garita Mountains. Where Cheryl and I went in the summer of 2025.
