The Boone Tunnel was carved in 1926 to allow cars to bypass a treacherous curve and directly approach the “Brooklyn Bridge” crossing the Kentucky River between Wilmore and Harrodsburg. That first bridge had been built in 1871 and replaced Cogars Ferry which had been established to service stagecoaches crossing the river along the Lexington, Harrodsburg and Perryville Turnpike . That Iron structure bridge, with wooden planking, collapsed in 1953. The concrete bridge shown here was built in 1956 to replace it. The river was a barrier back then…it still is!
