Dhan & Suzan and the Ice Age Mammals

It was a cold morning, but the two children were up early. Summer was over and they were both older. And both were hoping to go out on a full fall foraging party. Thery were old enough now to go together, but not yet old enough to go alone.

“Do not hunt,” said the Father to his children.

“You are not ready.” He had gotten up even earlier to tend to the fire. “All of the families will soon assemble at the lower creek valley and prepare for the big winter hunt.” [This was on Oil Creek in Southern Indiana.] “Today, I just want to know what’s out there and where. That is all you are to do. Find out and return.” He looked sternly at his children. But he knew they wanted to experience more about living.

“We are ready,” protested each child, trying to demonstrate the courage to join in on the hunt when it came forward.

“I will go with them today,” said the Mother, who had come up from behind the fallen block of sandstone that hid the bedding on which she and her husband slept through the evening.

Nothing more was said. That was that. The Mother had spoken, and in matters of family, mothers here controlled everything.
