The Hetch Hetchy Valley 2023

San Francisco needed fresh water to grow. The City wanted to take it from the sister canyon of the majestic Yosemite Valley in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. From the adjacent Hetch Hetchy Valley.  President Roosevelt resisted, but after the earthquake and fire that destroyed San Francisco in 1906, political pressure was too great. The first dam was completed in 1923 and the first water delivered to the city in 1934. It is said that the damming  of the Hetch Hetchy canyons broke the heart of John Muir. If you are ever in San Francisco, taste the tap water. It is delicious. Now you know why!
