My hike in Paint Gap where Union General George Morgan began his retreat from Cumberland Gap, Kentucky. General Morgan and his 8,600 able men had been had been surrounded by Confederate General Kirby Smith’s Confederate Army when they swept over Cumberland Mountain and invaded Kentucky from Chattanooga. For two weeks and 200 hundred miles, Morgan would elude the Confederates by traveling the rugged trails running across the Eastern Kentucky Mountains until finally reaching the Ohio River at Greenup, Kentucky.
