What you walk upon differs in slope, sight, and sensation. But if you don’t look down, what you walk upon remains unknown. Ignored, except for the occasional pebble, shaped for use as a childhood missile, to hurl across ponds or splash down in puddles. For those who look closer, who get down in the creek bed and get muddy, the firmament is a book, and each step, a page turner. Suspenseful opportunities teaching people about what happened previously. Susanne and Dan spent a lot of time reading in the creek beds of their old family farm in Kentucky.
Their grandfather had taught them of this interest, for he was long a veteran of creek rock inspection with his own father. Especially during the dryer months when the bedrock was more exposed to touching, its aquatic life retreating to a string of pool pearls to weather the drought that had cornered them within. That’s when he took Susanne and Dan down to the creek with him to look further.
His father, their great-grandfather, lived to be 105 and was very alert when he left them. The children called him Pappa Dovey, and he taught them much about living.
