Description
In his new, annotated work, La Maison de Charette de la Contrie, Ronald R. Van Stockum outlines the story of the distinguished Charette family of France. It details the ancestry of Atoine, Marquis de Charette, descendant of Charles X, known as Tony, who fell in love with Susanne Henning of Kentucky, daughter of Sue Henning, a major figure in the breeding and exhibiting of Jesey cattle. The author and his late wife, Susanne de Charette Van Stockum, daughter of the Marquis de Charette and Susanne Henning researched in detail genealogical, historical, military, and peerage documents in America and France.
Van Stockum outlines battles and honors of successive generals of the Maison de Charette, with emphasis upon the strong women who supported them.
General Francois-Athanase de Charette, who in 1781 served aboard one of the ships of Admiral de Grasse, whose blockading fleet prevented the reinforcement from the sea of ord Cronwallis’ besieged forces at Yorktown, became later a revered leader in the Vendéen Revolution during 1793 and 1796. The book also features General Baron Athanasee de Charette, leader of the Papal Zouaves, famous for the charge he led during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870. The final pages of this remarkable book contain photographs of the Charette men, women, and events, plus a simplified genealogical chart defining the Charette Connections with the House of Bourbon.
