It was a neat night out with the musical Mathis family. Cheryl and I split up to cover it. Sister Melinda was singing lead and harmony with Sara Bond and the Pretty Goods Band that includes Aaron Hunt, Jareth Gaddis, Brandan Bond, and backed up for the first time by the talented guitarist Paulie Felice. They were playing at a new agricultural venue north of Simpsonville, the Hob Nob Social at Kentucky Hills Wagyu Farms.
I rode over to the Last Stop Brewing Company, Pub and Restaurant. They had invited Brother Lewis to bring all of his family, and sing all original music. I’m not going to miss that opportunity!
Big Lewis and Jan Mathis, gospel and four part harmony singers, were there with four generations of their family, including Noelle, Michaela and Brent’s wife, Brittany.
On stage was their singer songwriting son Lewis, a true Bard of the Guitar who, like Tim Krekel once did, makes his living singing. Backing him up was son Zach, incredibly steady on percussion. He plays in my band and I rely on him to root down my own singing.
But the true pleasure of the evening was son Brent Mathis, singing a whole set of his original compositions. Is he better than the rest of us?
I was very impressed. The musicality of his writing swung along and elevated his lyrics. And his singing is sweet and meaningful. Add in the accomplished drummer, Paul Woods sitting in on the conga, and you’ve got great evening of music!
